Implant treatment is a very important treatment. This treatment method is frequently preferred in terms of both oral and dental health and aesthetics. Oral care is very important for the long-term use of implant treatment. In this article, we have compiled the oral care that should be done during and after implant treatment. Healthy reading!
Implant and oral care
Oral care for the first 48 hours after the implant treatment process is considered very important. It is recommended by dentists to avoid situations that may cause pressure on the jaw surface in the mouth. It is recommended not to rinse the mouth and not gargle for 1 day after the implant treatment. Saliva accumulated in the mouth should not be thrown out as much as possible. Spitting behavior by sucking can cause pressure in the mouth and this pressure is considered quite harmful. Again, snoring or blowing behaviors that will cause pressure in the mouth are seen as harmful and are not recommended. Oral and dental care in implant treatment should be done by paying attention to the following recommendations.
During the first days of implant treatment, it is recommended to be very careful during oral cleaning, brushing, and flossing. Teeth should be brushed and floss should be used as slowly as possible. It is also recommended to clean the implant-treated areas with a moistened cotton cloth or gauze.
Post İmplant Care
Oral care after implant treatment may be different based on daily oral care. It supports the longevity of the implant treatment by paying attention to the following oral care tips after the implant treatment. Oral care after implant treatment can be done as follows;
1. The tampons placed on the implanted area should be bitten for one hour so that they do not loosen. These tampons can be discarded if the bleeding stops after one hour. If bleeding continues, a new clean tampon is placed and bitten for another half hour. If the bleeding continues, tampon application should be continued until the bleeding stops. If the bleeding lasts longer, the dentist should be consulted.
2. It is not recommended to eat or drink anything for the first 2 hours after implant treatment. It is recommended to stay away from hot and cold foods for a long time in the first 48 to 72 hours. It is recommended to consume soft and room temperature foods. It is recommended to stay away from acidic fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, and spicy foods.
3. Smoking should not be consumed during the implant treatment until full recovery is observed. It is recommended to avoid smoking whenever possible. This is because smoking irritates the wound area and can delay healing and cause other risks. For patients who smoke excessively, it may take quite a while for the sutures to close in the wound area.
4. Facial edema may occur after oral surgical treatment. This situation is considered normal. It is recommended to apply ice compresses to the operation area intermittently. At the end of the first 72 hours of implant treatment, edema, that is swelling decreases.
5. The areas that are not treated with implants can be applied with the normal brushing method. It is recommended to brush the teeth in the operation area without touching the stitches and gingiva. Approximately two days after the operation, it is recommended to gargle with the mouthwash recommended by the dentist, after brushing the teeth twice a day in the morning and evening.
Long-term care recommendations after implant surgery
A prosthesis, called an over-implant prosthesis, is attached to each implant. This prosthesis can be a single dental crown or bridge prosthesis, or it can be a fixed or removable prosthesis on the implant. Food residues accumulating around the implant can cause implant disease, which is defined as “implants”, just like in gum disease. For this reason, it is recommended to meticulously clean the part where the implant and the gingiva meet, and the spaces between the implant and the surrounding teeth. For this reason, it is recommended to use dental floss and interface brushes in addition to the normal toothbrush. The dentist gives the patient information on how to use these brushes.
What Kind of Path Is Followed in Implant Treatment?
As in every dental treatment, treatment is applied in a certain period in implant treatment. The steps for implant treatment are as follows;
1- Inspection; We can define it as the first stage interviewed for the analysis of situations such as the general oral condition of the patient, and whether the jawbone is suitable for implant treatment. At this stage, the denture and the color of the tooth are selected.
2- Operation; Local anesthesia and numbing method are preferred for placing the implant screw in the jaw. The duration of the operation may differ according to the number of missing teeth to be added to the implant. However, if we need to generalize this process, this process is 30-90 minutes.
3- Healing Process; After the implant is placed in the jawbone of the tooth, it is necessary to wait for the placed material to fuse with the bone. This fusion process may vary between 3-6 months depending on the structure of the jawbone and the fusion of the implant with the jawbone. During this period, patients can continue their daily nutrition routines without applying too much pressure to the implant-treated area.
4- Placement of the Upper Structure of the Implant Tooth; While the first part of the implant dental treatment, which consists of two separate parts, is placed on the jawbone, the second structure, called the upper part, is placed inside the screw applied to the jawbone.
5- Placing the Implant Prosthesis; The last step, the placement step of the prosthesis, is completed by placing the prosthesis prepared according to the superstructure and its compatibility with the other teeth.
Implant treatment differs according to the methods to be applied, the number of teeth to be applied, the type of material to be used and the problems in the mouth.
